Hello guys and gals, and welcome to the 39th Edition of our weekly writing competitions and opportunities digest. The last edition is available here.

If you noticed that there was no digest last week, then well spotted! Did you miss us? Well we’re back this week with a new selection of writing opportunities to get your creative juices flowing. Do you ever feel like you don’t know whether you’re coming or going? If so, then the first on today’s list with its “Arrivals and departures” theme should be perfect for you.

Opportunity type – Submissions sought for an anthology (poetry, stories and memoir).
Theme – Arrivals and departures.
Word count – Up to 2,500 words .
Organiser/publisher – CommuterLit.
Reward – They say “Authors whose work is accepted for the anthology will be compensated”.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – April 21, 2014.

Notes – They also accept general submissions on an ongoing basis, see website for more details.

Opportunity type – Short story callout for an anthology.
Theme – Fire (needs to be horror, fantasy or science fiction).
Word count – 3,000 to 7,000 words (firm).
Organiser/publisher – Nocturnal Press Publications.
Reward – Publication only.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – May 15, 2014.

Notes – They expect to publish the anthology in July.

 

Opportunity type – Cosmopolitan magazine fiction contest.
Theme – Any, but must align with the spirit of the magazine.
Word Count – Up to 1,000 words.
Organiser/publisher – Cosmopolitan.
Reward – Publication in Cosmopolitan magazine plus the chance to meet with HarperCollins editors .
Eligibility – US residents only (NOTE. the next item on today’s Limebird digest offers an opportunity to submit to the UK Cosmopolitan magazine).
Deadline – April 30, 2014.

Notes – 10 finalists will initially be judged on the following criteria: (A) 25% alignment with the spirit of Cosmo (B) 25% writing skill, and (C) 50% entertainment value of the piece .

Opportunity type – Write about a true experience for a magazine.
Theme – Any experience that’s worth talking about; could be emotional, traumatic, hilarious etc.
Word count – Maximum 800 words.
Organiser/publisher – Cosmopolitan.
Reward – Publication on Cosmpolitan.co.uk (it also says that terms will be discussed with those selected for publication).
Eligibility – Not specified (it’s within the ‘Cosmo on Campus’ section, but it doesn’t specify that only students can submit).
Deadline – December 31, 2014.

Notes – Not clear whether publication is only online, or within the hard copy magazine too.

Opportunity type – Publisher accepting unsolicited manuscripts.
Theme – Most genres except poetry and memoirs.
Word count – 30,000 to 120,000+ words.
Organiser/publisher – GMTA Publishing.
Reward – Says they take 50% of the sales.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – As always, do thoroughly check out any publisher before submitting a manuscript.
